Imagine large, dinner plate-sized flowers in shades of pink, red, white, and even bi-color combinations, blooming profusely in late summer to early fall. That is the lovely perennial hibiscus you’re dreaming of. Perennial hibiscus flowers are not only strikingly beautiful but also come in a variety of forms—from single blooms to ruffled doubles. Known mostly for its breathtaking flowers, perennial hibiscus is a hardy plant (USDA Hardiness Zones 4-9) that thrives in Pittsburgh, PA's zone 7 climate, offering gardeners a spectacular display year after year.
SUN: Plant hibiscus in a spot that receives full sun for at least 6-8 hours a day. This will encourage abundant blooming.
SOIL: Ensure the soil is rich in organic matter and well-drained. Hibiscus plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil pH.
WATER: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot summer months. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
PRUNING: In early spring, prune back any dead or damaged stems to promote new growth and maintain a tidy appearance. Do not prune after late April or early May since this is when palnts are setting the buds that will become flowers in July and through August.
WINTER CARE: Cut back to about 6" in late fall after leaves have browned and dropped. An additional layer of mulch never hurts but is not necessary.
